5 Reasons September is the New January: How To Embrace the Seasonal Change Like a Boss

We’ll come out with it: who else is just a teensy bit happy Autumn is here? Don’t get us wrong – while we’re keeping everything crossed for a few crisp sunny days before the descent into winter, our minds and bodies are ready for some relief from the rosé nights and wedding season follies.

When it comes to new beginnings, January seems to reign supreme as “the time” to make a change. But we’re going a bit rogue and crowning September as the best time of year for self improvement. And here’s why…

YOUR SOCIAL CALENDAR QUIETENS DOWN
The party season limbo that is September and October is prime time to do anything which you’ve been putting off or not had time to do between all your social engagements (you popular thing, you). Autumn is ideal for setting aside time to deep clean your flat, do a charity clear out, locking down your finances or even scheduling in a regular self care slot.

YOU MIGHT ACTUALLY MANAGE TO FORM A NEW HABIT
Studies show it can take around 66 days for a new action to become automatic. Want to wake up 30 minutes earlier everyday so you can start with that turmeric tonic instead of a cup of joe? Get into the flow now and you’ll be well in your new flow by the time the unpredictable nature of pre-Christmas party season rolls into the mix.

THE ASTROS ARE ON YOUR SIDE
Between the new moon entering Virgo this week (if you’re into that sort of thing, this is key as the sign is known for its affinity toward alignment and balance) and the Autumn Equinox on Friday 22nd September, which signals the start of the new season as it’s considered the official start of Autumn. Yogis especially use this time to look inward and find balance mentally and physically through practice at this time of year.

YOU CAN STILL GET OUTSIDE
If you’ve ever thought about taking up walking or running to work, now is the time. The temperature is that pleasant middle ground and the time change is still a few weeks away. Read: fewer reasons to talk yourself out of it and enough time before the elements turn against you. Plus, researchers at the University of Essex found that exercising outdoors will significantly boost your mood – just make sure you take to a green space as urban backdrops didn’t produce the same results in the study’s subjects.

THE FOOD IS ON POINT THIS TIME OF YEAR
More of a ready meal type? Or just found yourself slipping into the same chicken + sweet potato + broccoli #mealprep vibe week after week? Now is the time to break free! The Autumn Equinox traditionally marked the yearly harvest and while supermarkets may have confused this significance (year-round mangos in the UK, sure…), there is a huge amount of delicious ingredients to get your hands on.
