This week we caught up with Micki Ramondt, one of Frame Academy’s YTT specialist teachers on all things Yoga at Frame, how she found Yoga herself and Yoga and Nutritional Therapy…
My yoga journey began in an interesting place, in my advertising company. I was a creative director and partner in a B2B advertising company. I’d been in advertising for 13 years and was starting to become tired of the competitive nature of that big beast, and I wanted a change but didn’t know what else to do. I’d always been in some sort of design world since I graduated from art school where I majored in Graphic design and minored in Sculpture.
By the time I was 34 I had mostly been a gym rat and also swam on swim teams since the age of 6. So working out was a norm for me. But like most people, I heard that yoga was good for you. So I tried a class out at my local gym. It was NOT love at first pose back then. I quickly stopped went back to the old familiar stair climbers and weights.
A year later I tried it again. Different gym, different teacher…I WAS NOW IN LOVE!! Very quickly I felt that I found my new calling. I wanted to be a yoga teacher. So I practised for the year and a half before I could apply to the YTT program I chose in Philadelphia, PA USA. In my YTT program, there were only about 4 out of 18 of us that wanted to be full-time teachers. At 36 I became a certified yoga teacher.
After finishing my training, I continued to work part-time for a different advertising company until the universe reminded me I wanted to be a full-time yoga teacher…I got fired. Once I got over the ego crush, I realised…YES! This is wanted, and I asked for. Now it’s up to me to make this happen. My full-time teaching career began with much excitement and support from my husband, family and friends. That was well over 10,000 hours of teaching ago…
In 2011 my husband and I, plus a cat and dog moved to London. Very cliché but it really was a new chapter in my life book called Micki. But one that I would never change or take out. London has availed me more opportunities than I ever thought possible. I started teaching in London in 2012 and in March of 2014, I began teaching at Frame. Since then I’ve taught all over London. Been invited to teach yoga retreats in Mallorca, Croatia, Sardinia, Puglia, Ibiza and England.
I went back to school to study Nutrition Therapy and graduated in October 2016 from The College of Naturopathic Medicine, one of the UK’s largest, highly respected and well-known natural-medicine training providers. Then in 2017 Frame invited me to join their YTT program, as a mentor and as the Nutrition lecturer. I was, of course, pleased and honoured to be a part of this program.
In the program, I teach the students a bit about Ayurveda since it is so closely related to Yoga. As I’m not formally trained in this, I don’t go too far in depth with it. But we do go on to discuss overall health food habits and choices we make. I hope that everyone learns that everybody is different, so we need to listen and learn to eat the best of our bodies and mind.
Micki teaches regular Yin, Vinyasa and Frame Yoga classes – plus the occasional workshop – in Shoreditch. Click here to book a class with Micki.
