THE BENEFITS OF WALKING

By Kajsa

Walking can have a huge impact on mind, body and soul.

A wander around a park can do wonders for a hangover. A solo stroll in the great outdoors puts day-to-day worries into perspective. Commuting by foot means you arrive at work in a better mood than those sardines squished on the underground.

These aren’t coincidences. Walking can have a huge impact on mind, body and soul. It’s also free, sociable and a great way to explore somewhere new. So what are you waiting for? Here’s why you should join our new Frame Walking Club.

Keep Fit And Healthy

Putting one foot in front of the other is something that shouldn’t be underestimated when it comes to health and fitness. In fact, walking is a great way to complement and enhance your training routine.

Regular brisk walks – and by brisk, we mean those which raise your heart rate and make you a little breathless – have been shown to improve fitness levels, and in turn your physical health. Numerous studies have linked walking to heart health, lower blood sugar and a stronger immune system (among tons of other benefits).

Walking is also a great form of active recovery if you hit too many Frame classes and are feeling a bit sore, or if you’re recovering from an injury and need to focus on lower impact exercise for a while. It’s also well known that doing too much of the same exercise can lead the body to plateau, so why not mix things up a little?

Boost Your Mental Health

There’s a reason people recommend going for a walk to ‘clear your head’. Studies have shown walking can improve mood, self-confidence, creativity and sleep. Got an important meeting to prepare for (or recover from)? Lace-up those trainers and get cracking.

Mind, the UK’s leading mental health charity, also recommends walking as a way to help manage stress and anxiety, and reduce risk of depression. Scientists have also shown that ‘green exercise’ (aka walking in nature) can have an even greater impact on mental health.

Meet People

This doesn’t need to be a solo pursuit – at least not every time! Grab some friends or join the Frame Walking Club. We’d also recommend getting a dog (any excuse, eh?).

Walking with others will help keep you motivated and pushing yourself, but it’s a great way to meet people and explore new places as a team. Maybe after you’re done head to the pub for a celebratory pint.

How To Get Started (And Stay Motivated)

Get kitted out: Wear comfortable trainers, fill up your reusable water bottle, and maybe pack an umbrella (it is England after all).

Mix up your routes: You can obviously go for a walk on a treadmill or down your local high street, but planning a route to do some proper exploring is the best way to go. We’d recommend a walk in nature.

Challenge yourself: If you’re walking as part of your training, why not experiment with interval training or steep terrains to power up those legs.

What’s more, you don’t need to pound the pavement to reap the mental health rewards of walking – a relaxed stroll will do it! Stick on an inspiring podcast or your favourite playlist (we’d recommend Lizzo any day of the week) and feel yourself start to regain a sense of self.
