Discover more happiness through the practice of Yoga

I think if you ask most people what they’d like more of in their life, they’d say happiness. It seems to be this elusive thing that only comes to Dali Lamas, those that meditate 20 hours a day or those with lots of money. So what are us everyday people supposed to do?

One of the main things I mention to my students when speaking to them in class, is that happiness already sits inside you, it’s about you discovering it, or uncovering it. The day to day stressors of life can cover that happiness up. The prevalence of social media, I believe, has actually been a curse to our happiness. Full of comparing and therefore feeling like you’ve fallen short and don’t deserve happiness. But I’m here to tell you… that’s a load of BS!!

So what is happiness? In a way it’s being in a space in which you don’t want or desire anything. Freedom from those weights. If we’re not desiring things, we can allow ourselves to be more grateful for the people and things we already have. And when we see those things, feel grateful for those things, we start to tap into and uncover the happiness within ourselves.

So how does Yoga, specifically the physical practice of asanas, help you discover more happiness?

Yoga kindly forces us to focus on what we’re doing that very second. Otherwise we either fall out of the pose, miss what the teacher said, or we’ve stopped breathing. With focus, we drop the to-do lists, the emails we still need to write, the argument we had with a friend or partner. We just move and breath. We twist and wring out those physical and mental toxins that cloud our thinking and pull us further away from our joyful and compassionate self.

During Yoga we feel our bodies move and our minds open up to possibilities, possibilities within the class and outside. We might take delight in all the things our bodies can do, instead of holding on tightly to the things it can not.

I always like to share a quote at the beginning of my Yoga classes
“We cannot ignore this life. Especially the painful, embarrassing and frustrating parts of it. But through practice, we can transform these experiences into fuel for awakening — and not an awaking somewhere else beyond the rough edges of modern human life — but right here in there middle of it. — River Shannon

Allow yourself to awaken the simple joys in life. Seeing and smelling a blooming flower. Hearing someone you love’s voice. Listening to your favourite song. These things are free and you don’t need to be a master of meditation, you just need to have your eyes open enough to see these things and how they make you feel… HAPPY.
