A beginner’s guide on why you should start Yoga, a Q&A with our Head of Yoga Micki Ramondt

WE KNOW THERE ARE COUNTLESS BENEFITS OF YOGA, CAN YOU PULL OUT YOUR TOP 3?

1. Yoga improves strength, flexibility, and balance. All of this is needed to have a healthy mobile body. This becomes even more important as we age, and even MORE important for women as we move towards menopause.

2. Yoga helps us to relax, reduce stress and in turn better sleep. Whether it’s a physically challenging Yoga class or a more chill style like Yin or Restorative.

3. Yoga can alleviate pain and relieve tension. It does this by releasing knots in the body, emotional blockages, and the releasing of held emotions.

And as a result of all of the above, this leads to better and brighter mood and more energy. And generally being nicer humans to be around.

DO YOU HAVE TO BE SPIRITUAL TO DO YOGA?

Of course you do not have to be spiritual to practice Yoga. Kind in mind, Yoga is not a religion, it is philosophy. It may be a part of someone’s religion, but it is not a religion in itself. You will find some teachers lead their classes in a more “spiritual” manner and others do not. So you can ignore any spiritual stuff or find a teacher that resonates with you and your belief system. Some people have described my classes as spiritual, but I like to think of them as inspirational. I will always read a quote in the beginning and end of the class. Giving you the opportunity to use it as an inspiration or intention for your practice or the time to find your own. Like sending love or strength to a friend or family member that’s having a tough time. Yoga in its full meaning is not meant to be ego or outcome based. It is meant to be a devotional and giving practice. But if you happen to get stronger shoulders or more flexible hamstrings… great!

CAN YOU EXPLAIN HOW ELSE A YOGA PRACTICE CAN IMPACT YOUR MENTAL & PHYSICAL HEALTH… AND HELP US IN THE PURSUIT OF “SMASHING LIFE”?

Picture this… You got a great night sleep, you get up early to go to a morning Yoga class. You get to the studio, you get your favourite spot, your teacher says “Morning, lovely to see you again!” Practice begins, you are taking full cleansing breaths, clearing out the annoying email or the argument you had with a pedestrian on the way in. All of it dissolves away like an old memory. As you move, you really begin to connect to your body, it’s speaking to you with simple yes’ and no’s on what feels good or not. You listen. You can feel your body sweating, releasing emotional and chemical toxins. Some poses challenge you, but you’ve started to figure them out. You feel a sense of accomplishment and even a little pride. Nothing is going on in your mind other than focus on your breath and body. The time of the class goes by quickly, before you know it, you are on the floor doing some final stretches before savasana. In savasana, you feel exhausted but invigorated at the same time. Time to LET GO! The teacher brings you out of savasana, everyone sits up, feeling a sense of gratitude for the practice and for what your body just did for you and always does. You thank all the other Framers around you for sharing this practice with you. You leave feeling like you can take on your day. Sounds good, right?

WHAT’S AN UNUSUAL BENEFIT OF YOGA PEOPLE MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT?

Yoga is a community, or a sangha (a Sanskrit word also meaning collection or assemblage), we come together to feel that sense of togetherness through joined movement, breath, rest and by being listened to. There’s no obligation to chat or get to know your neighbours, by showing up the mat at the same time that same day, there’s an underlining sense of community, mutual appreciation and shared achievement.

There is still an epidemic of loneliness post COVID and coming together in group exercise, Yoga and beyond, supports our mental health and mindfulness.

I’M RIDICULOUSLY INFLEXIBLE WITH TERRIBLE BALANCE, CAN I STILL DO YOGA?

Of course you can. I heard this many years ago when addressing this exact statement. “Would you say you’re too dirty to take a bath or shower?” No, this is why you DO take a bath or shower. So this can be why you go to a Yoga class. Yoga classes are not meant to be a place to show off to all the other students what one can do. It is your personal practice being practiced at the same time as other’s practice.

There is more to Yoga than just flexibility and balance. When you come to class you will discover for yourself all the other faucets that peak your interests.

CAN YOU DO YOGA ALONGSIDE OTHER TYPES OF EXERCISE?

Yes, Yoga can be done alongside other types of exercise. In fact, I strongly suggest we practice different disciplines of movement and exercise to stay well rounded. Pillars of physical health can be seen as Strength, Flexibility and Cardio.
